International Call To Action For A Humane Companion Animals’ Management in Romania

Romania Refuses to End Dog Genocide

In the last 30 years, Romania has been killing more than 1,5 million dogs from public funding, spending 1 billion euros for euthanasia, as the only dog management method. Romanian authorities spend up to 1000 euros per captured and killed dog, while many Romanians lack hospitals, education and even basic living facilities like access to education, current water or electricity. Out of these funds, zero have been redirected to end dog reproduction, despite constant efforts from the nonguvernamental sector.

The perpetual flux of stray dogs is a resource for atrocious cruelty acts against animals, which then relapses into high rates of domestic violence, Romania being the top country in the European records.

The socio-economic impact of the dog phenomenon goes beyond animals. Besides the bare necessities of the country, several human and children rights are broken by this vicious, cruel cycle. The United Nations stated that children exposure to animal cruelty is a direct infringement of their rights. A 2012 study of the Malcom Plant – University Teeside of Uk, in collaboration with Denver University, shows that 86,3% of the Romanian children have been exposed to animal cruelty in the streets, several times. Entire generations are traumatised by brutal, untrained dogcatchers.

Euthanasia has been proved to be inefficient and cruel since the 80s, according to WHO and practice. Nonetheless, dogs in Romania are rarely killed according to the protocol, but in unspeakable cruel ways. Shelters are pure slaughters.

Reports show that the numbers are increasing. Last year, 30 000 dogs were euthanized and 10 000 died in shelters, many of the latter representing over 50% of the captured dogs. The most common reasons are famine, canibalism and untreated disease.

The situation has been tempered solely by the extreme efforts of the NGOs, through foreign funding, dedicated to spaying and neutering and hundreds of thousands of adoptions. But even with this considerable support, NGOs cannot substitute the authorities.

We need international help

Artists, activists, international media – please invite your fellows to join the campaign and make a call to the Romanian authorities to end this slaughter and corrupt business!

Dog is man’s best friend and we need him in medicine, police, natural disasters, emotional support and so many more! Dogs’ capacities cannot be surpassed by any technology. They are one of the most valuable resources for increasing life quality. Let’s save together the dogs that still can be saved!
